The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher – The Murder at Road Hill House
‘The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher-The Murder at Road Hill House‘ is not just a detective novel, it is also a wonderful look at the history of Victorian Britain and its social values. This alone makes it a very interesting read, however the main excitement of the book is based around a horrific country house murder in 1860. The fact that it is based on a true story (the author used original police papers from the National Archives) makes it all the more fascinating for the reader.
The book tells the horrifying story of The Road Hill House murder when a young toddler was brutally murdered by another member of the household. The book mainly details the investigation and the heart breaking aftermath for the family after this tragic event. Not one for the faint hearted of course, but perfect for anyone who enjoys a good detective novel and has a passion for history. The book itself is very well written and you can tell the author, Kate Summerscale, has done a huge amount of research. She certainly manages to keep the tension throughout which makes the book difficult to put down.
‘The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher-The Murder at Road Hill House‘ translates into audio form very well. Simon Vance does a wonderful job as narrator and keeps the right amount of suspense and tension throughout the audio book. He does a wonderful job bringing the many different characters to life and keeping the right amount of light and shade through the darker points of the story and slightly more uplifting points too. This audio book would make a wonderful addition to your collection and is available to download now.
