Paths Of Glory is a semi-biographical story of George Mallory and his attempt to be the first person ever to climb to the top of Mt. Everest. The story covers a thirty-two year period of George Mallory’s life beginning, of course, with his childhood and ending with his third, and un-known to him-his final attempt to climb Mt Everest in 1924 aged thirty-seven. Unfortunately it shall always remain a mystery as to whether the real George Mallory ever achieved this goal as he was last seen four hundred feet from the top.

Jeffrey Archer manages to go into great detail about Mallory’s life, being careful not to miss out a single, important moment. He finds a way to mix fact with fiction that works extremely well. Archer covers each part of Mallory’s life including his relationship with his father who always encouraged his love for climbing and adventure and his school years when climbing took a back seat to education until he found friends with and equal amount of enthusiasm for climbing. Although Archer does go into great detail, I also liked how he leaves the reader wanting to find out more about George Mallory and his exciting life, especially his mysterious disappearance.

The audio-book version of Archer’s story works very well. His language is descriptive and interesting and this comes across quite nicely. Roger Allam does a very good job with the narration and keeping the novel alive and exciting, perhaps more so than in its original book form.

The second book in Stephenie Meyer’s vampire romance series continues the story of Bella and Edward and their rollercoaster lives in a small community. Bella begins to realise just how dangerous it is to be in love with a vampire and for Edward, keeping her safe is becoming increasingly difficult. This second thrilling installment of Meyer’s cult fantasy-romance is again expertly narrated by Ilyana Kadushin, who skilfully brings to life each and every voice, drawing the listener deep into the darkly romantic tale.

New Moon tells a story of losing love as Edward tries to protect Bella by leaving the town of Forks after an incident at her birthday party. Bella seeks comfort in a new friendship, but her new companion, Jacob, turns out to have secrets of his own. Listeners might detect echoes of the classic love story Romeo and Juliet in this second book of Meyer’s series, intended to reflect the protagonists’ plight as ’star-crossed lovers’.

This audio adaptation of a best selling book has much to recommend it and the seductive narrative is sure to delight listeners. Faithfully bringing each unique character to life, the engaging storyline is well suited to Kadushin’s voice and for fans of Twilight, New Moon will not disappoint. The plot twists and stunningly original storylines will keep you hooked on this popular series and leave you hungry for the next instalment. The overarching theme of the book, namely love and its ability to overcome obstacles, will appeal to a wide variety of listeners by allowing anyone to relate to characters living what might, on the surface, seem drastically different from our own lives. New Moon builds on the success of Twilight and more than deserves the hype.

Having taken a tentative and sceptical look at the first week of this series, I delved into the treasures of the second week with a little less hesitancy, and was rewarded with slightly more practical advice than you might have found from the first of the series. I do like that each week is literally broken down into working day sections with snappy titles for each that outline the basic content. The main focus this week was attitude, both how to develop the kinds of habits that will hopefully lead to business success and ultimately make you like one of the featured self-made millionaires, as well as guidance on risk taking and building self confidence.

I was particularly pleased with the final day, day 10, which talked about both persistence as well as the ability to take ‘no’ for an answer. This is advice that pretty much every deluded individual taking part in a TV Talent Show should take as knowing your limits and knowing when to accept defeat are an important part of business as much as they are of life in general.

On the other hand week 2 presents you with some scenarios which are easier said than done, and no matter how many times some people are encouraged to conquer their fears and banish their restrictive demons it’s just not going to happen. Perhaps this series should feature a suffix that reminds shoppers that willpower and a certain amount of talent are required for real success. However, overall this week has proved to be a strong and useful continuation of what is shaping up to be a significantly interesting series of audio books.

Any avid fan of ‘Dragons Den’ will be very familiar with Duncan Bannatyne and his apparent wealth. What they may not be so familiar with is his incredible story of how he became so very wealthy. His story begins by describing his tough and under privileged life in a Glasgow tenement. He then goes on to describe how he earned money to buy the things he wanted and tells of his time in the Royal Navy. The greatest part is his turning point when at 30 he decided he wanted to make himself a millionaire and five years later achieved it and is now worth 168 million.

Duncan Bannatyne tells his story beautifully and articulately and leaves nothing out of his colourful and exciting life, from the business aspects to the more personal parts of his life. Reading this book will not necessarily turn you into a millionaire, but it will certainly give you the determination and drive you need if you wish to change your life. In this book he tells how anyone can get to where he is today which makes the reader feel incredibly motivated.

This book works incredibly well in an audio-book format. You almost feel as though you are listening to your own personal motivational speaker. Duncan Bannatyne does not do the narration himself which is a shame as it is always interesting to hear the author tell their own story, however, David Rintoul does a fantastic job to a point were you almost feel as though you are listening to Duncan Bannatyne himself. I highly recommend this audio-book as a great addition to any collection.

It is fair to say that, right from Gaelic times, the Irish have always had a well known talent for story telling. These have been offered to friends, family and strangers as a way of communication and entertainment for years. ‘Classic Irish Short Stories’ is a selection of a few of the best short stories by some of the most wonderful Irish authors from Goldsmith and O’Brien to Joyce and Trevor. This book concentrates on some of the earlier Irish writers who had a particular talent for imaginative writing and short stories.

This book is a fantastic read and has a wonderful range of different stories such as Oscar Wildes hilarious story ‘The model Millionaire’ about a young man who’s fortune takes a turn for the better, Gerald Griffins terrifying “The Brown Man”, James Joyce’s “Araby”, Oliver Goldsmiths “Adventures of a Strolling Player”, Sheridan Le Fanu’s story about Sir Dominick Sarsfield or the “Faustian” and of course Agnes Castle’s romantic “Rosanna”.

This book works wonderfully in an audio-book format. The imaginative and descriptive language is even better spoken aloud especially with the rich voiced narrator T.P. McKenna who’s expertise and experience with story telling is made clear in this audio-book. His smooth voice really adds some authenticity and a nice edge to each beautifully written short story. Each character is given a different voice to a point where you would swear you were listening to a whole cast and not just T.P. McKenna.

Jeffrey Archers ‘A Prisoner Of Birth’ pays homage to Alexander Dumas classic adventure tale ‘The Count Of Monte Cristo’ and it is safe to say Dumas fans will not be disappointed! ‘A Prisoner Of Birth’ tells the story of four friends from Cambridge University (who refer to themsleves as the ‘three musketeers’) and their plan to frame their friend Danny Cartwright for the murder of Dannys brother in law to be Bernie Wilson. Danny ends up facing a twenty-two year long life sentence in a maximum security prison, ‘Belmarsh’, but ends up being lucky enough to share his cell with Sir Nicholas Moncrieff, who teaches him to read and write. Danny manages to escape by impersonating him and begins his plot to exact revenge on the people who wronged him.

This book has been fantastically written and it is clear that Archer himslef has used some of his own first hand experience to describe the prison life. This brings a great amount of realism to the story. You are on the side of Danny all the way through and are constantly waiting to see what happens to him next.

It is mainly due to the excitement and adventure in this book that makes it translate so well to audio book form. Roger Allam, once again, does a fantastic job at narrating, always making sure that each character is enhanced with different vocal patterns and inflections. It is due to this that the story begins sounding like a whole cast of people rather than just one man and Allam definitely does Archer’s book justice. The unabridged version also includes an interview with Jeffrey Archer about A Prisoner of Birth.

This is a particularly interesting audio book series that I believe spans several weeks and essentially sets itself out as a bite sized guide to business success that works on a day to day model. I’ve listened to week 1 so far, and I have to say I am quite a fan of the format. Provided that you disregard the slightly worrying advertising that promises that the series will “reprogram” your brain in order to make you a better business program, there’s a wealth of information to be had that will be useful to most if not all of its target audience. Basically the first week seems to set out to teach you how to dress, behave and talk like an entrepreneur, which for most on the surface will seem like a good thing, especially if you’re coming from a different profession and have no experience in the business world.

The 5 sections of this first book are ideal for listening to whilst you’re in the car or on the way to work (I put mine on a MP3 player and listened on the train) and the subtitles of each section are pleasantly cheesy or irritatingly contrite depending on your point of view, and whilst they don’t seem to give much information about each different topic thanks to vague buzz words, the content is generally good and informative.

It’s nice to hear the opinions and glean help from the experience of established, successful entrepreneurs, and there’s even a free workbook provided in a link as an accompaniment to the series. To be honest I haven’t looked at the workbook myself, but it may come in handy in the future.

My feelings about this audio book are mixed, and that is because ultimately I think whether you find this book useful or not is a subjective matter. What this means is that for some people this book will feel like a revelation and will possibly have a positive impact upon their lives, whilst for others it may feel like a self-important, banal waste of time that feels hard to connect with. How you feel about this book will depend on a number of factors, and I won’t presume to delineate exactly what these factors will be, but personality and self-confidence will have a lot to do with it.

Basically this is a book that outlines the personal views on morals and ethics as held by the author, and rather than being a self help book that gives you steps to success in business or life, it aims at providing you with the moral framework that will help you achieve success on your own terms. That this comes from religion may be for some more than others, and that there is nothing really original in the content itself may be another problem, but this is nothing if not an exhaustive look at one person’s life view.

The main criticism leveled at this audio book by myself and others is that Covey himself, the author and narrator, isn’t the most compelling speaker in the world, and this unabridged version of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a bit of a monster listen. There’s over an hour long introduction and for some people the meat of the text is never fully expressed in a succinct fashion, but it has proved to be an inspiration for some.

As a big fan of Dawn French, I was concerned that I may not enjoy her autobiography quite as much as some of her brilliant work. Luckily for me I was not disappointed! Her talent for great comedy and story telling really shines through in this honest, funny and, at some points, heart breaking book. We get given a close look into her relationships with the most important people in her life including her parents, daughter, friends and of course her comic husband Lenny Henry. Dawn French leaves nothing out of her book and is very open about all the most important points in her life including her highs such as her influences in comedy and at some points, harrowing lows including the tragic death of her father. This gives the reader a chance to feel as if they know Dawn French on a more personal level.

This book translates into audio form extremely well. The way Dawn tells her story it is almost as if it was written just to be read aloud. It was because of this that I was disappointed to hear that Liza Tarbuck was narrating it and not Dawn. I felt that it was a shame to miss out on hearing her story told first hand with that great voice and comic timing…however Liza Tarbuck does a fantastic job in bringing her wonderful story to life. I can understand why it may have been difficult for Dawn to do the narrating herself as some parts of it are so deeply sentimental and must have been hard to write about let alone talk about.

I would recommend this audio book to anyone whether they are a big fan of Dawn French or not.

Previously released under the title ‘Q&A’, the story of Slumdog Millionaire has become an international sensation following Danny Boyle’s critically acclaimed film of the same name. Vikas Swarup’s uplifting yet somewhat disturbing book was written in only an incredible two months and brings to life the unique sights and sounds of Mumbai’s slums.

The audio book is beautifully narrated by Kati Nicholl and Kerry Shale, who really succeed in bringing Swarup’s masterpiece to life. The story revolves around the childhood and adolescence of two young brothers from the Mumbai slums, one of whom goes on to become a contestant on a television quiz show. Against the odds, the main character, Jamal, makes it to the final question, worth the almost unimaginable sum of twenty million rupees. Fearing cheating, an interrogation ensues in which details of the boys’ life are revealed in tracing his apparently obscure knowledge back to his youth running around the Mumbai slums and the often terrible things that happened to him along the way. We travel with Jamal as he meets his Bollywood idol, experiences first hand the Hindu-Muslim riots, is forced into street begging by a local gangster and finally finds a job as a ‘chai wallah’ in one of Mumbai’s many international call centres.

The delightful audio ultimately tells a story about love in difficult circumstances but there is not an ounce of cliché in it. One of the most original books to appear on the audio scene in a long time, Slumdog Millionaire will enthrall you from the very beginning and you will struggle to switch it off. The sounds and vitality of urban India are brilliantly captured by the narrative making listeners feel that they are in the heart of the action throughout.
